New York, NY/Santa Clara, CA -- (November 11, 1996) --
Television, a division of Viacom Inc., and Yahoo! Inc. announced
today that they have formed a strategic partnership to develop and
promote the ultimate guide to music on the web. The MTV/Yahoo!
guide, unfURLed, will launch January 1997 and will be accessible from
Yahoo!'s web site (www.yahoo.com) and MTV Online (mtv.com and on
America Online keyword: MTV).
"When you think of music you think of MTV and when you think of
where to go first when surfing the Net, you think of Yahoo!,"
commented Matt Farber, Senior Vice President, Programming/New
Business, MTV. "Together we are the perfect partners to create a
road map through the more than 75,000 different music sites on the
Web. With custom editorial from the people who put the M in MTV and
expertise from Yahoo!, the pioneer in guides to the Internet,
unfURLed will be the starting point for everyone who is interested in
exploring music sites on the Web."
More than just an alphabetical catalogue or search engine,
unfURLed will be the definitive, one-stop guide to music on the Web.
All music sites and their features will be reviewed by MTV editors
and classified into unique intuitive categories. The guide will
constantly be updated to let users know which sites are informative,
eye-catching and "just plain cool." Whether interested in a specific
band or type of music, the MTV audience will be able to find the best
of what's out there on the Web for the music which most appeals to
them. In addition, unfURLed will advise users what, if any, special
software/hardware they need to fully experience any given site.
In addition to offering reviews by MTV editors and insight from
Yahoo! surfers, the guide will also feature site reviews submitted by
users, as well as weekly columns on the state of the Web, live event
listings, breaking news, music reviews, and weekly flash polls.
"Through partnerships with industry leaders such as MTV, Yahoo! is
able to consistently deliver dynamic and innovative programming to
our users," said Jeff Mallett, Senior Vice President of Business
Operations at Yahoo!. "This joint venture will leverage the
complementary strengths of Yahoo! and MTV to create, distribute and
market an excellent service for an important growing audience."
As a special pre-launch promotion, MTV Online and Yahoo! will
create the "Best of Music Web '96." Working with a panel of music
industry experts, MTV Online and Yahoo! will nominate web sites in
five different categories for the Best of Music '96 award. Beginning
early December, MTV Online and Yahoo! users will have the opportunity
to vote for their favorite of the nominated sites. The Best of
'Music Web '96' winners will be announced when the site launches.
MTV Networks, a unit of Viacom Inc., owns and operates five cable television programming services -- MTV: Music Television, M2, VH1, Nickelodeon/Nick at Nite, and Nick at Nite's TV Land -- all of which are trademarks of MTV Networks.
