Yahoo! Pledges Support For Presidents' Summit For America's Future

Goal to Reach Six Million People through Online Community Service Promotion and Commitment

YAHOO! PLEDGES SUPPORT FOR PRESIDENTS' SUMMIT FOR AMERICA'S FUTURESANTA CLARA, Calif. -- April 21, 1997 -- In support of its ongoing dedication to promote community awareness, Yahoo! Inc. (http://www.yahoo.com) today announced its strong commitment and enthusiastic support of the Presidents' Summit for America's Future being held in Philadelphia on April 27-29. Yahoo! has committed to providing $2 million of advertising on its online properties to non-profit organizations supporting the five goals set by the Summit committee. Yahoo! will also promote an Online Call to Action by connecting youths and adults to community service organizations through Yahooligans!, the most popular Web guide for kids, and My Yahoo!, a personalizable guide to the Web. In addition, Yahoo! employees plan to volunteer 10,000 hours to working with non-profit organizations on behalf of children across the United States. By the year 2000, Yahoo! expects to affect the lives of more than six million individuals through its online promotion and Call to Action efforts.

"Yahoo! is proud to be part of the coalition of businesses making proactive efforts for our nation's children and their communities," said David Filo, Yahoo!'s co-founder and Chief Yahoo. "Since founding Yahoo!, we have dedicated resources to building communities both online and offline. We are delighted the presidents are initiating this important effort to help children and are excited about supporting the Presidents' Summit by leveraging our partnerships with non-profit organizations and our ability to reach large audiences online."

To help achieve the goals (Mentoring, Protecting, Nurturing, Teaching, and Serving) of the Summit committee, Yahoo! is developing long-term relationships with key non-profit organizations and has already committed to working with Youth Service America (creator of the SERVEnet Web site) and the Benton Foundation (creator of the KidsCampaigns Web site). By volunteering and working closely with non-profits, Yahoo! will empower communities to create positive and productive environments for children across the United States. In addition, Yahoo! will promote an Online Call to Action through the Yahooligans! and My Yahoo! Web sites. Yahooligans! will feature a Community Service button on its front page, offering kids information on volunteering and non-profit organizations, and My Yahoo! will point users to resources that show how they can get involved within their local area. Providing access to community service organizations through online promotion and Online Calls to Action will help raise awareness of the challenges faced by young people today and offer solutions that all individuals can take part in.

"Our collaboration with Yahoo! will have a historic impact on youth service," said Steve Culbertson, CEO of Youth Service America, a Washington D.C.-based organization representing community and national service groups across the country. "With Yahoo!'s amazing capacity to drive Internet traffic and Youth Service America's long tradition as a leader in community and national service, SERVEnet will encourage a new group of Americans to solve problems in their communities."

"KidsCampaigns and Yahoo! are joining forces to promote online access to comprehensive information on all aspects of children's health and well-being," explains Susan Nall Bales, director of children's programs at the Benton Foundation, publishers of the KidsCampaigns site. "By enabling adults to build real-time communities for kids, Yahoo! and KidsCampaigns are actively pursuing the goals set forth by the President's Summit."

Since its inception, Yahoo! has been dedicated to promoting community awareness through outreach, education, and information access. By offering exposure for non-profit organizations, providing free educational seminars, and connecting classrooms to the Internet, Yahoo! is bringing people together to build stronger communities across the United States. Yahoo! has already created partnerships with more than 50 national and local non-profit organizations including Children's Miracle Network, Habitat for Humanity, Do Something, Oakland Children's Hospital, American Diabetes Association, Plugged In, AIDS Ride, American Cancer Society, Digital Clubhouse Network, and the National Educational Foundation.

Youth Service America (YSA) will link millions of Americans to volunteer and service opportunities through SERVEnet (www.servenet.org), the largest site on the Internet dedicated to service and volunteering. YSA's commitment to the upcoming Presidents' Summit is that SERVEnet will feature at least one volunteer opportunity in each zip code by the year 2000. Simply by entering their zip codes, individuals across the country can find volunteer opportunities. A completely interactive site, SERVEnet's content is often generated by its users who range from service volunteers to service professionals. As a "hub" site, SERVEnet is updated daily, offering service news, volunteer opportunities, an interactive library, career center, service database, national calendar, chat rooms, listservs, a ballot box, and free e-mail to all who register as a SERVEnet citizen. The Community Connections area links people to groups involved in service and volunteering. For frequent content providers, SERVEnet will highlight the organizations' websites as an incentive. YSA Online describes Youth Service America's programs.

The Benton Foundation's KidsCampaigns (www.kidscampaigns.org) site is the information, knowledge, and action center for adults who want to make their communities work for kids. KidsCampaigns is creating a cyber-community for adults -- on behalf of kids -- that helps jump-start real communities to act on behalf of children. It contains several noteworthy campaigns on kids, including a national public service campaign produced by the Advertising Council, called Whose Side Are You On?. This campaign seeks to motivate Americans to act on behalf of kids. KidsCampaigns is also the electronic home of the Coalition for America's Children. The Coalition consists of 350 organizations -- from the local children's hospital to the PTA and Junior League -- all working to improve the lives of America's children. KidsCampaigns provides a resource for dozens of children's issues linked to hundreds of organizations that are campaigning for kids across the country.
